I'm a sysadmin and a maker from Japan, currently working on a makerspace project in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
We have been running workshops on electronics and programming for kids and adults since 2022, and supporting local students for a few years. The subjects we teach are hard to find in the country, very new to local Khmer people. Some international schools in the city, for those who come from rich families, advertise Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math education program, or STEM, as part of their curriculum. Some teachers and school managers do understand the importance of STEM. However, I'm seriously doubt they could find qualified teachers in the area.
What we do is different: we are demonstrating examples of IoT, programming on tiny micro-controllers, and home automation in our guesthouse business. I have been an engineer, and still am.
If you support us, you might change someone's life forever. When I was a kid, I did not own a computer. "Personal computer" was not a thing at the time. As a kid in a rural city, I did not have friends who have similar tastes in the classroom. The only computer, a 8 bit computer with a cassette tape loader, I had access to was one in a local community centre of science. The first BASIC program I wrote was written on my notebook. My textbook was a reference manual of the computer, not written for kids at all. After decades, I got a job as an IT engineer. I still appreciate all the people who gave me access to resources and chances.
Please give our students chances. Thank you.
