This functionality has been added as AsyncExecutionInterceptor for 3.0 M2, with a corresponding @Async annotation and AsyncAnnotationAdvisor. This is capable of handling void return types as well as java.util.concurrent.Future (similar to EJB 3.1).

In 3.0 M3, we'll be adding a scheduling namespace with convenient configuration for this as well.
