IMPULSE MCA Now in STEREO 👀 #29

Coincidence counting with Impulse is easy. You need two scintillation detectors and two audio spectrometers (gammaspectacular). The primary spectrometer defaults to the left channel, so it is a good idea to connect and adjust the primary detector first. You will need a modified made stereo cable with 3.5 mm stereo jack plugs, where the left and right channels cross over. Typical setup with two detectors and an Na22 source... The boolean "coincidence switch in Impulse sets the program into coincidence mode and must be set before the START button. Here we can see the single annihilation peak from coincident 511 keV gamma from Na-22 When the detectors are positioned at an angle we can observe almost no coincidences. Placing the detectors in this configuration is a great way to observe muons. Have fun... Note: If you are upgrading from an older version you might need to delete the old shape.csv file in the impulse-data directory. Steven |

I finally added coincidence counting to IMPULSE MCA. To do coincidence counting, a detector has to be connected to the right Audio channel, this is easy to do with the GS-PRO-V5 as the Audio jack functions as a right channel input. Check out the manual for proper connection.
Pulse shape acquisition now obtains the mean pulse shape from both left and right channels and the distortion curve produces a line for both channels
The default left channel should always the primary detector and the secondary detector or trigger should be connected to the right channel.
The boolean coincidence switch on Tab 2 needs to be switched on before starting a coincidence spectrum.
I recommend testing confirming the count rate with a regular spectrum before running a coincidence spectrum, you should see the count rate drop significantly.
For the moment I have hard coded the coincidence window to 3 samples either side of the peak, therefore a smaller window can be achieved by using a higher sample rate.
It would be great to get some feedback on this before I package up the windows and Mac versions.
