Suggestions for depth in REST API?

I was hoping there was a way to evaluate relationships 2 levels down in the REST API, but it appears to be hardcoded to just the first level (though I might be misreading the code). Any suggestions for going one level deeper aside from (1) switching to GraphQL or (2) looping through and doing all the additional queries (i.e. n+1 problem)? Hoping I'm missing something obvious!
