In Kafka 3.9.0, the KIP-1017 introduced new health check endpoint for Kafka Connect. Once we have Kafka 3.9.0 supported (or perhaps after we drop support for the older versions) we should make some use of it in our Connect and MM2 deployments instead of our current health checks.
