Conversations with Special Collections and University Archives have brought out the need to support an "access note" in SDR. This note is similar to but not identical with the Use and Reproduction note that SDR already supports and would be displayed on Purl and SearchWorks pages.
Purpose
The primary purpose of the access note is to describe restrictions on access to content in SDR. This has come up especially around material that has a published Purl but which is only available under specific terms, such as a reading room location restriction or a requirement to contact the library (who may be able to provide access through a mode other than the Purl/embed viewer, such as a third-party service that supports single-user access controls). Unlike the use and reproduction note, which applies to what people can do with material once they have viewed or copied it, the access note explains how people can access the material in the first place.
There is a corresponding note in MARC that gets displayed for items that have MARC records. But items that have only SDR-created MODS do not support this note. Supporting this note would enable us to provide a more consistent display.
Work needed to implement an Access note within the SDR infrastructure
In Argo, add an entry box for the Access note to the Create/Edit APO page
In Argo, add an entry box for the Access note to the bulk action page for editing licenses and rights statements
In Argo, after moving to the new show page design, display the Access note and make it editable
Related work in Access systems
The larger conversation about access notes also brought out the need to display these notes more prominently. While this work is not blocked by the lack of support for Access notes in SDR, it is closely related.
Restriction on Access
We have not yet entered any "Restriction on Access" statements in DOR, so PURL is not yet set up to show them. This need to be evaluated.

Additional information
An Access note was envisioned for the Chimera project but support for it was not implemented. See the rightsMetadata documentation:
