Certain Badges (usually the first and/or last badge) have been failing. When I click on it, I get redirected to the following a camo.githubcontent.com url which gives a response

This issue has been mentioned in the shields repository (where I got my badges from): badges/shields#1568

It is not caused due to the speed of your connection; rather some combination of shields server's capacity, and the upstream services being slow or rate limiting them. Github images are served through a proxy, and the meaning of the 504 Gateway Timeout is that the shields server has taken too long to respond to the proxy, and the proxy has given up.
