I have my personal overlay within my dotfiles respository, I keep that in my home directory because it's used by multiple applications. I have tried using ln -s ~/dotfiles/emacs/Wolfy87 ~/.emacs.d/contrib/Wolfy87 but it doesn't pick any of my configuration up.

If I copy the directory in it works fine though. I'm running Arch Linux with Emacs 24.4. I'll see if I can work it out too, I'd really like to help maintain this project as I think I'm going to be using it a lot.

The default .spacemacs states that it should default to melpa-stable, but that doesn't appear to be used anywhere. Is that placeholder?

I'm glad you find this project useful and you want to contribute, this project needs contributors!
I will look too for the ln -s issue.

Indeed it is a placeholder, this is one planed feature for the configuration layer system: a nice data structure to list packages with properties like the ELPA repository (if this property is not specified then this placeholder value will be used). The idea is to have a stable package distribution by default, but if needed we should be able to easily mark a specific package to use another repo (like MELPA not stable).

Oh I just noticed I had an issue for this, see #5 (but there is no details in it :-))

@Wolfy87 I implemented your idea on Gitter (see comment there and commit 93e1ff2). Although you are not blocked anymore it does not solve this issue so we can keep it opened.

Having my own layers directory is working great, but it would be cool to solve the symlinking too.

I close this issue since nobody seems to have this issue anymore.
