AddImageToMediaGallery returns error

I managed to save the product image to S3 bucket.
but when I tried add the image to gallery, it always gives me "The image does not exist" error message.
Is it because Magento does not allow 3rd party url for the product image?

Do you have any idea, how can I set the product image as s3 url in Magento without copy the image to the local server?
