Still trying to understand this completely, but it seems to me that to some degree, the recommendations must be prefaced on how much memory you need to allow with: mapred.map.child.java.opts In other words, if I'm on an m2.xlarge with 17G of ram but configure for 6G per mapper to deal with supernodes then i likely can't have more than 2 mappers per instance.
