Dark mode is all the rage these days and while I can get behind that at least most of the time, one area where I've been having trouble accepting it is on the web. I have trouble focusing with dark user interfaces that are too saturated on the web for some reason. I usually refer to those color schemes as inky and solarized dark (which I heard the current web UI theme is based on) is one of those "inky" color schemes. If possible, I would love to have something that uses straight up white as the background. 😄

Thanks for adding this issue, @dotellie! So, basically you find the text (like logs or errors) hard to read when it's light text on a dark background?

Would it resolve your issue if areas with lots of text (like logs) are dark text on a light background? Or is it important for everything in the interface to be light? (Like the Sidebars as well?)

(Sorry for the very delayed reply, life's been busy 😓 )

In my ideal world, everything would be light but I think that as long as the main areas are light, things like the sidebar shouldn't matter too much.

This is somewhat unrelated, but I had a little look through the web code and noticed you are using SCSS for the styling. Have you considered changing to a CSS-in-JS solution with theming support in order to be able to do this sort of stuff more easily? I would probably be up to make a PR if you're interested.

I'd like to bump this. I usually prefer dark mode, but, now that it's warm in my part of the world, I like working outside a lot and find that the Tilt UI is extremely difficult to read in the bright sunlight. It would be ideal to have both a light and dark mode that auto-switches when I switch my computer between light and dark mode as many websites do. I'd be more than satisfied with a toggle, however.

➕ bump on this! Dark modes are bad for people with astigmatism, I have to lean forward and squint to read on dark themed interfaces.

Please make 3 options:

  • dark theme
  • light theme
  • current system theme (auto switch)

I'm not generally a fan of adding comments to an issue that don't work towards resolution, but I want to provide some personal accessibility context on top of what folks have said here already: I can strain my eyes easily, so I use light mode with low brightness and a blue light filter on my machines. Having a light mode would be incredibly helpful for me, as I have been using the log stream in my terminal in the interim.

I understand there are design and brand considerations at play too, so I understand that this isn't easy to do. Thanks for the great product and I hope light theme can get implemented!

It's now 2024. Any progress on this seemingly simple task? Dark mode hurts my eyes...

I have high prescription lenses for myopia and dark mode is absolutely horrible. You guys who use dark mode have no idea how bad it is for those with vision like mine. I like Tilt a lot, but please prioritize this and make a light mode!

I might be able to do it. In fact I'll take a look.
