SOCKS proxy is not working

Configuring a SOCKS proxy does not seem to work. Configuring the same proxy in Firefox works, and I can even access transmission's built-in web UI through that.

Steps to reproduce:

1. run ssh server_hostname -D 4096 (this runs a SOCKS proxy on that port)
2. configure the proxy in the "Proxy" tab of the "Manage connections to Transmission" window
3. try to connect, and observe: "Connection error occurred: connection reset by peer"

1. Operating system: Arch Linux
2. Transmission Daemon: 4.0.5
3. Transmission Remote GUI: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/transgui-qt , version 5.18.0-2

Same problem on Mac OSX, firefox browsing with SOCKS5 on SSH connection can access transmission but not the transgui v5.18.0
