There is a bug in qemu-arm-static that is used to build the image, that produces an overflow and silently fails when executing the command READDIR.
This among others produces an error for the mine database which breaks the pixbuf binary which in turn breaks the icons and background in desktop.
To remedy that, as proposed in the above link, we should switch to a x86 binary for qemu-user-static.
