Release 0.5.0 Planning

I believe there are a bunch of features that a variety of people are interested in using soon or now, so I'd like to propose that we move in the direction of a release by listing what we think is important to have in the current one that is not yet complete. To that end, the following is a list of issues, PRs, or other changes that one or more people would like to see completed before the next release. If you are a maintainer, please edit this message to add your own items to this list.

• Inconsistent Attributes key behaviour between otel4s and oteljava #513, Disallow duplicate key names in Attributes #515, Partially redesign Attributes #529 (critical)
• Proposal: Widen List AttributeTypes to Seq #510, Widen List AttributeTypes to Seq #512
• As a follow-up to Enhance core APIs to support Attributes #494, run through (especially core) APIs and check for consistency (no issue or PR yet)
• Extension methods for converting between Java and Scala Attributes; this may be useful in test code as well: Add AttributeConverters #544
• Simplify other conversion extension methods as suggested here: Simplify PropagatorConverters #545
• Add OtelJava.noop() #542, oteljava: add OtelJava.noop #543
• Fix bug in PassThroughPropagator #551
• Add Tracer#currentSpanOrThrow #555
• Update opentelemetry-semconv to 1.24.0-alpha #568

Additionally, I'd like to propose that we publish a pre-release (0.5.0-alpha.1) immediately, simply because it's easy to do so.

I was thinking about a proper release recently. The Scala Steward is ready.
Even though the Tracing SDK module is ready, I want to postpone it till the next release to provide proper documentation.

Most of the mentioned changes (except for the #510) should be binary compatible, so we can publish 0.5.1 as soon as we want.

I would love to see the new release, especially because of

• Expose OtelJava's LocalContext #464 To be able to change and access to baggage
• metrics: make Meter[F].observableGauge generic #453

And by the way I'm in the middle of a production code migration from the Java lib to Otel4s, and it feels so good. Thank you guys for this library!

From my perspective, the SDK tracing module is ready to be released.
Should we publish it in 0.5.0? Or is it better to release 0.5.0 first and then 0.6.0 with the SDK module a few days later?

just a small note: to be compliant with semver, the release candidate following RC9 (should we end up with that many) needs to be either RC90 or RC91 (depending on whether or not you find the coexistence of RC9 and RC90 to be confusing). then, the release candidate following RC99 would need to be either RC990 or RC991, etc. this is because semver orders segments that are not purely numeric using ascii ordering.

alternatively, you can start adding additional segments to the end, e.g. RC9.0, RC9.15, etc.
