I think the current set up is OK but it could be more configurable.

An ideal configuration for me:

  1. three big bells, or a roll down (when one must be in one's seat)
  2. three small bells (to begin meditation)
  3. two small bells (to begin walking)
  4. one sound of clap sticks (to return to seat)
  5. three small bells (to begin zazen)
  6. one small bell (to end meditation)

This is a configuration for two periods of zazen but it should be simple to extend to any number. Therefore I suggest the options centre around variables to set: ramp-up time; sitting time; walking time and number of sitting periods. As for sounds: initial sound; begin sitting; begin walking; end walking; end meditation.

Probably some of these variables should only appear when one chooses greater than one period of sitting.

The ramp-up time would apply to each sitting period.

Since sometimes one may like to switch legs half way through rather than walk, rather than have a variable for number of walking periods there could be an option to sound a half-way bell.

Finally, at certain times of day there would be sounds shortly before the end of the last period of zazen. In the morning, the Han (wooden plate) interspersed with the Umpan (metal plate) and in the evening the Han by itself. The accelerating sound of the Han is said to encourage mindfulness of impermanence.
