Description

Establish the capability of coupling both regional FV3ATM parent domain and static/moving nest domain with regional ocean and wave model components. This capability is needed in a future upgrade of UFS-HAFS (hurricane application) operational implementation.

Currently, only the regional FV3ATM parent domain directly communicate with the regional HYCOM/MOM6 ocean domain and the regional WW3 wave domain. The FV3ATM nest (static/moving) gets the oceanic and wave coupling variables (fields) by downscaling the related values from its FV3ATM parent. Meanwhile, the high-resolution atmospheric forcing from the FV3ATM nest feeds back to its FV3ATM parent (coarse grid resolution) through two-way nesting feedback, which will then be communicated with ocean/wave domains.

A better/improved coupling strategy/mechanism would be enabling the direct coupling/communication between both FV3ATM parent and static/moving nest(s) with oceanic/wave model components.

Solution

Brainstorm, explore, discuss, implement, and test the regional FV3ATM parent and nest coupling capability with other regional ocean and wave model components within the ufs-weather-model framework.

Alternatives

Do not support direct coupling between the FV3ATM nest domain and other ocean/wave components.
