15.3.0-rc: Expanding tree is sometimes really slow

Bug summary

With latest changes in contrib branch (15.3.0-rc) I have noticed expanding tree is sometime really slow, although it only has a few children.

As seen in video here (skip to 0:20):

Furthermore does it need to show the loading bar if the tree node as previously been expanded and not loading further as it seems to flicker for a short moment only.

Steps to reproduce

Sometimes on initial load expanding e.g. Products or Blog take a while (several seconds) with The Starterkit package.

Seems a bit concerning, but just adding one data point - I can't seem to see it with a clean install of the starter kit using the code in the release branch for 15.3-rc. The nodes look to expand in a timely manner for me.
