Does Next.js respect the browser field in package.json?

Summary

I have in my package.json:

  "main": "./host/code/node.js",
  "browser": "./host/code/browser.js",
}

It used to work, and sometimes works, but not 100% of the time. Sometimes it tries to load the main (node.js) package. Any ideas if this is supposed to work or how to improve it?

This is regarding browser field in package.json in an external library I load into a Next.js app.
