Steps to reproduce

Focus <md-textarea> on screens bigger than 1440x900. If the textarea has no value in it, then it's font-size is set to 1px instead of 16px. To simulate bigger screen than I actually have, I have zoomed out the broswer's viewport, but it happens on big screens in the same way.

Which browser?

Google Chrome 63, MacOS High Sierra 10.13.2
