Ideally the links should be converted such that they are

Fully configurable
Come with defaults precisely corresponding to the Mediawiki link style
Efficient
Without code reuse

Currently:

Not configurable at all
Come with defaults which approximate Mediawiki link style but haven't been checked for correctness
Efficient (but badly written)
Reusing code in a way that is completely unnecessary if the function was designed properly.
