I'd like to drop here some draft document of the idea that I introduced during one of the group meetings in the TPAC 2023.

I hope it could help to continue the discussion, if you find it interesting.

Safari is opposed to this, since we think protocol handlers should work from all apps on the system, and not only in the browser context.

@xeenon Can you clarify what you mean? This in no way prevents apps from handling protocols.

A protocol registered in an extension would not be visible to apps, it would only be visible in the browser.

The browser can register its handling of the scheme with the OS.

Thank you for discussing the issue in the last meeting. Quite unfortunate that I couldn't attend, although the feedback provided in the minutes is very useful. I'll take some time to digest it and, if possible, would like to revisit the issue in a future meeting.
