Quick summary:

We currently use a hamburger menu as the navigation system for both desktop and mobile which isn't ideal as desktop has much more screen space to take advantage of an exposed navigation system. As we move the tree container to the left of the screen, we are also including the side menu as well in the same location. We want to begin with just the default state of the side menu then add other nice to have features on top of the new design.

Issues:

There is a past PR opened on this ticket that is incomplete, but has done plenty of work to get you started. There is already enough work to just get the first portion of the design out with some editing I believe.
