It would be immensely useful to be able to import and use custom made .dictionary files (same as used in macOS Dictionary app). One could then utilize dictionaries and thesaurus outside of Apple-provided languages, specific to a profession or other needs, offline.

Ooh good idea! I like it! Do you have any source dictionaries in mind?

(If there is a decent, royalty-free dictionary file available for at least English, that might allow me to put Kotoba on the App Store...)

I have successfully used DictUnifier macOS app to convert StarDict-formatted files (examples) to Dictionary app bundles. Some ready-made bundles for Dictionary.app can be found for example here: http://clasquin-johnson.co.za/michel/mac-os-x-dictionaries/
