On newer version of GitLab, Chef-Guard throws and error:

Failed to send git spam: The token configured for GitLab group <group> is not valid!

This error orginates from Line 206 in gitlab.go. Sometime around the release of GitLab 11.6, GitLab changed the permissions on the non-api urls.

The API equivalent could be used but it would require parsing the JSON and re-constructing the diff.
