Volume Normalisation on Tidal-DL (Query)

Hey all!

First off - Great platform!

I have been using tidal-dl for only a few days now and seen a few queries online about whether the downloaded files would have any kind of volume normalisation applied?

I had an existing tidal account which I’m using and have volume normalisation off on my phone app but noticed it was on when I checked the desktop app. So there’s no ‘’master setting’ to turn VN off for the whole account.

I’m 99% sure the files I’ve downloaded don’t have VN applied when comparing to direct downloads from Bandcamp etc.

Also I would assume tidal-dl works much the same as Deemix where the tracks that are being downloaded are untouched / unchanged audio from source.

Just looking for confirmation :)

There is no alteration to the audio bits of the files that are downloaded from Tidal.
If there was, the mqa files would no longer be recognized by software or hardware as such.
So no volume normalization is applied and it shouldn't.
Also for non mqa files, this is not recommended to apply normalization before it's saved, it would make the files lossy.
It's better to have the lossless version and then you can still choose to normalize it yourself using software like dbPoweramp,
or you can apply replaygain in foobar which doesn't even touch the original bits, but just adds a tag telling the player to adjust volume.
