Let's make this happen 🍬

I started working on this, but ran into a few questions it would be useful to get input on from the team on.

Strap-line :octocat:

Most of the developers I've spoken to at conferences are using yo for a mix of static site projects, webapps and sometimes desktop binaries. What do we think about changing the strapline to:

The Web's Scaffolding Tool For New Projects

Is this sensible or too broad? I feel like we're no longer just used for modern webapps.

Generators ✏️

I suggest we change the text to something like:

Get started & then find a generator for your site or webapp. Quickly get started with Gulp or Grunt as well as Angular, React, Polymer and over 3000+ other projects.

Improvements welcome. This drops Backbone, finally includes the Gulp WebApp generator and updates the number.

Tools and "What's Yeoman?" 🔧 🔨

I suggest completely drop 'Tools' and break "What's Yeoman?" down into a few short, concise descriptions of what we do well. The Gulp homepage covers this type of thing quite well for their project. Maybe for us..

  • What's Yeoman?
  • Easy to use
  • Highly customisable
  • Extensible

Used by 💯

We're now used by (at least) the following list of large companies:

used-by

We'd need to get their permission to use logos (I can chase) but where do we think this would be best placed in the homepage? I initially had it somewhere like near the top, but it could also just as easily go somewhere lower down.

### Color-scheme. Switch to something more red 💄

I've been playing around with #E85350. Any other ideas completely welcome here.

### Team list 👨 👲 👧 👩

It's long and includes team members who contributed a few years ago but haven't been active in recent years. In an effort to keep the homepage lean, what do we think about trimming down the list to active contributors? We can have the entire list on a teams page (similar to how the jQuery team do this) so we're not just discarding folks awesome contributions from the site.

Intro video? 📹

We can probably get a new one of these done in the Google studio if we feel there's value to one. I think we'd want to keep it super high-level so it doesn't go out of date. Alternatively, we could just do something like a text-based preview of yo webapp (a little similar to what the grunt homepage does).

Stretch ideas. May be terrible 🙈

  • Stress (somewhere) that you can literally scaffold anything. We don't care if you use npm for package management or Bower, Grunt or Gulp or whatever.
  • Call out tools that have integrated support for yo
  • Call out really good community articles/series on Yeoman

Aside: we really really need a new Yeoman codelab or one that is more basic than the Angular one. Common piece of feedback I hear is that it feels like we're focusing too much on getting folks learning Angular there than understanding what Yeoman can do for you.

👍

Somethings that came into my mind:

Strap-line

The FullStack Scaffolding Tool For New Projects ?

As there are many generator out there which not just web specific? 🙈

We could have a generator search page similar to Gulp's plugin search page? (That is bit more detailed)

Loads of ❤️ for #E85350.

Animated characters at the intro video like what Google Developers channel does would be uber cool.

Video about simple howtos and creating your own yeoman generators would also be useful?

A big 👍 for Calling out really good community articles/series on Yeoman. (Maybe even do a podcast/video chat with the devs who have the most famous generators out there ;))

Like most of the cool kids, should make the homepage a progressive webapp, with quick ref to docs and searching generators 😉 ?

I'd like us to show the broad range of generators on the homepage rather than just calling it out.

It'd be awesome to feature 9 great generators directly on the homepage - like npm. ref #459

Strap-line :octocat:

Its not just web either. Its also mobile apps, server apps, pretty much any code app. How about super broad:

The Developer's Scaffolding Tool For New Projects

Generators ✏️

Get started by finding a generator for your project. Choose from popular options like Angular, React, Polymer and over 3000+ other projects.

Tools and "What's Yeoman?" 🔧 🔨

I agree about dropping tools

Used by 💯

Sounds good. Maybe a rotating list so it doesnt take up a lot of space?

Color-scheme

So much red. Red means stop or error. I like the soothing, inviting teal(?) we have now. Maybe we can accent places with red color.

Team list 👨 👲 👧 👩

Who do we put in the list? Maybe we should also send out a message to all the current members asking if they still want to be a part of the project.

We could have a separate team list regardless.

Intro video? 📹

Yay!

Stretch ideas. May be terrible 🙈

Yes like i said above.

@SBoudrias "I'd like us to show the broad range of generators on the homepage rather than just calling it out." 👍

@eddiemonge

"Maybe we should also send out a message to all the current members asking if they still want to be a part of the project." 👍

"So much red. Red means stop or error. I like the soothing, inviting teal(?) we have now. Maybe we can accent places with red color." I don't mind us exploring more we can do around teal.

"The Developer's Scaffolding Tool For New Projects" Ooh. Ambitious! Curious what others think about this.

@hemanth "We could have a generator search page similar to Gulp's plugin search page?" Is there something in particular you like about their search page? :)

"As there are many generator out there which not just web specific? " I think there are definitely non-web specific generators. I guess it depends on whether we think our audience there (or potential for audience there) is large enough to consider changing the strap-line in that direction.

Well, it might be just my 👀 but I liked the way it's presented.

We could avoid the keyword tagging and have info about last updated, stars and installs next to the generator name?

So you want everything centered? I prefer the list aligned how it is now. Easier for me to read instead of my eyes jumping back and forth as I scroll the list. Also opened #574 for talk on how to improve this

I'd like to see some love for the yeoman-app on the website - even though I admit the app is not ready for prime-time yet - that said, I'd like for us to at least take it into account and set up a plan for when it gets ready, how is going to be the best way to promote it on the homepage

I wonder if we can get permission to use the logos from some of the projects/companies using us over on the homepage. Worth a shot. Paging a few folks 📟

Microsoft: @bpasero @aeschli @ministainer @sesispla
IBM / BlueMix: @una @jakepeyser @clmath
PayPal: @vuhwang @nikulkarni
Facebook (React Native): @nicklockwood @vjeux
Yahoo: @mridgway @aljimenez
Sony: @ahirun0426
Netflix: @tomaslin
Google: will chase up internally. Used in the YouTube, Brand Studio and Google Cloud teams.

^ Hey folks. If you're on the cc list, we've noticed you're using Yeoman or our generator system :) Yeoman has been installed over 5 million times lately and we would love to (very briefly) highlight some of the companies using us in an upcoming refresh of our homepage. Specifically, a small logo mention and perhaps a link to the OSS (if available) generators you're using. If you would be up for it, we could really use your help asking for permission to use your respective logos. Can has help? 😸

If not, apologies for the ping. I know you're all busy folks :)

@addyosmani we've gotten approvals for PayPal. can you reach out to Duane O'Brien (duobrien@paypal.com)? He will provide you with the logo assets. thanks.

Thank you so much for the approvals. I've been reached out to by a few folks on the thread privately and it looks like we've got a number of entries that we can get added to the new homepage. I'm going to work on getting a first pass of this drafted up based on what is approved with logo use vs text mentions and show folks what it might look like for feedback.

How about the following strap lines according to the feedback from #742

Must say that I also had to learn about the term scaffolding as non native english speaker.

The tool to get your projects started

Doesn’t fit. Because sub generators and composing generators are used differently

The tool that generates the code that you don’t want to write

Too much negativity I guess.

Don’t repeat yourself. Let Yeoman to the work.

Is the logo think still in work?

How about the other points? Are there some points that already have happened?

Guess this issue needs a recap.

The new logo is under works (our illustrator has a full time job but is working on it in his spare time so might take a little to complete).

@mischah Was your suggestion the last of those? (Don't repeat yourself. Let Yeoman do the work)

Yop. It was the last:

Don't repeat yourself. Let Yeoman do the work

But I’m not sure if its too vague.
