Project Name

Tune-to-Sheets is a project focused on developing software that converts instrument sounds into sheet music. The main goal is to help musician, who want an easier way to turn their musical ideas into readable sheet music without struggling with traditional notation tools.

Phase I: Analyzing Users, Competitors, and Initial Designs

Executive Summary

  • Competitive analysis shows each option's unique strengths and weaknesses
    • Melody Scanner: multiple input/output options, solo instruments only, limited free version
    • PianoConvert: quick processing, piano only, limited free trial
    • MuseScore: large library and playback, no conversion, limited free version
    • Fiverr: Human transcribed music, inconsistent quality and speed
  • Heuristic evaluation of Melody Scanner showed key issues to address
    • Incongruity between how inexperienced users may expect something to work and how it actually works
    • Error messages provide little insight into actual source of error
    • Limited flexibility, lack of options in conversion process
  • Personas and scenarios further reinforce user preferences
    • Simple, easily understandable conversion process
    • Unlimited, free access to all features
  • Sketches and diagrams show how new design concepts are being put into practice
    • Simple, clean, understandable interface
    • Convenient, instant access to conversion from main screen

Phase II: Refining interaction and designing wireframes

Executive Summary

This phase, the UX team worked on gathering feedback from sources outside of the team and finalizing wireframes

  • Completed wireframes for higher fidelity view of UI
  • Cognitive walkthrough showed need for:
    • Better feedback on errors and actions
    • Better clarity around the account system
    • Better guidance, particularly first-time users
  • Informal feedback revealed further user desires:
    • Guest login option (already added)
    • Playback, editing, tempo and key changes, simplified display mode
    • History tracking
    • Instrument specific adjustments
  • Planned changes:
    • Refined menus and navigation
    • Enhanced account options
    • Better user feedback
    • Improvements to key pages

Phase III: Prototypes and User Testing

Executive Summary

This phase, the UX team finalized the app's prototype and conducted usability testing to gather further user feedback

  • Completed interactive prototypes
  • Usability Test showed need for:
    • Improved visual customization
    • Further improvements in feedback
    • Clarification of Record vs Convert
    • Explanation of limitations of a Guest login
    • Implementation of sheet music viewing and editing
  • Planned changes:
    • Add feedback to more interactions
    • Add first-time user explanations for key features
    • Add warning when logging in as a Guest
    • Add sheet music editor and viewer
