Instructions for updating the analytics page

We update the analytics page monthly.

Users, sessions & page views

  • Data is in the NRRD Portal 1 report, Page Views tab.
  • Chart is generated using the Page Views worksheet in this spreadsheet (limited access).
  • In the excel, add in the month's: Page Views, Sessions, Totals Users.
  • Make sure the chart in the Excel is updated to incorporate the most recent month's data.
  • Take a screenshot of the chart and save the file as NRRD_Users.png and upload it to the Analytics folder in the research repo. That will update the chart on the analytics page.
  • Then update the data in the markdown table on the Analytics wiki page.

Monthly Dashboard Report

Site Searches

  • Data is in the NRRD Portal 1 report, Site Searches tab.
  • Add the top few search terms where there's a logical cutoff in the number of searches (often those with 2 or more result in fewer than 5 terms).

Landing Pages

  • Data is in the NRRD Portal 2 report, Landing Pages tab.
  • Add the top 3 landing pages and their sessions for the month to the markdown table.

Referring Pages

  • Data is in the NRRD Portal 1 report, Referring Pages tab.
  • Add the top three landing pages with their associated sessions and sources to the markdown table.

Devices

  • Data is in the NRRD Portal 1 report, Devices tab.
  • Add a row with the percentages for desktop, tablet, and mobile to the markdown table.

Browsers

  • Data is in the NRRD Portal 2 report, Browsers tab.
  • Add Device Category as a Secondary Dimension (the control for this is in the table header).
  • Add any browsers over 1% to the table and bold any over 10%.

Downloads

  • This one's not in a report.
  • Add the NRRD Users Segment.
  • Use the left nav to go to Behavior > Events > Top Events > Event Category
  • Use the value from "Query data download link" for Query Downloads and use the value from "Downloads" for "Downloads from Downloads Page"
  • Add the counts for the files to the appropriate markdown tables.

Requesting unsampled reports

If you need to get more than about 3 months of data (like when you want data for the whole fiscal year), Google Analytics samples the data. You know it’s sampling when the badge by the report title is yellow. If you mouse over the badge, it will tell you what percentage it’s bringing back.

If the percentage is less than 100%, you will need to request an unsampled report. Sometimes on behavior reports, the badge is yellow, but the percentage is 100%. I’m not sure why it does this, but you do not need to run an unsampled report if the percentage is 100%.

To request an unsampled report:

  1. Make sure all of the rows are showing in the report using the drop-down in the bottom right.

  1. Go to the Export menu in the top right and select Unsampled Report.

  1. I usually leave the default settings, but you may want to rename it to make it clear which report you’re generating. On multi-tab reports, it will only export the selected tab. Click on Request Unsampled and then wait for an email. It will take a few hours to send.

You get an allotment of tokens to use, so it’s possible to run out, especially when generating all the reports at the end of the fiscal year. If you run out for a day, it will usually send the report the next day.

  1. You can check on the status of your unsampled reports on the Customization > Unsampled Reports page.
