Instantiating an experiment

In order to create your experiment, you will need to instantiate one. You instantiate an experiment either when you make use of an existing template, or after you have created a new experiment type. If you want to learn more about the existing templates, first have a look at the experiment templates page.

On the LingoTurk page ''create experiment'', you can see the tiles that correspond to the existing experiment templates (including one for the experiment template that you have just created, in case you did this). You can click on the magnifying glass on the tiles to take a closer look at the experiment interface. You can choose to replicate any of these experiment, but note that you cannot make many changes to these templates. They mainly allow for you to upload your own items and description. If you wish to change something (like the type of connectives in the DiscourseConnectives template), you might need to create a new experiment type.

Now we will move on to describing how you can instantiate a template.

  1. Go to the tile of the type of experiment that you want to run. Click on it.
  2. Give your new experiment a name and a description.
  3. Click on ''Instructions'' (middle of the page, top of the box) and enter your instructions.
  4. Click on ''Experimental materials'' (middle of the page, top of the box). Now you will need to upload a csv-file that contains your items and any other relevant information (e.g., itemIDs, condition). Indicate what the separator in your cvs-file is. (For more info on what a csv-file is, click here)
  5. Once your file is loaded into LingoTurk, you will need to assign values to your relevant columns. Example: go to the column containing your item, and click on the drop down menu saying ''--select field---''. Select the appropriate value (e.g., story). Do this for all columns that you want the database to store (examples are itemID and condition, depending on the details of your experiment).
  6. When you are done, scroll down and click on ''Save in Database'' and then ''OK''. This will create your experiment. You will be redirected to the homepage.

To work on your newly created experiment, go to ''Manage existing experiments'' and find the experiment that you just created. On the right of this bar, there are 5 symbols:

  • X: delete the experiment
  • A notepad: edit instructions
  • An eye: view experiment (like a test run)
  • Square with arrow: publish experiment (when you're done with the design and have viewed the experiment to make sure it's ready)
  • A downward facing arrow: download results (when you are done with running the experiment and have collected all your data)

If you copied an existing template, you can view your experiment to see if anything needs to be changed. If you created a new experiment template and then instantiated it, you will need to further design it. More information on that can be found on the creating a new experiment page.
