Reorganizing extension methods for branch so they can be used on strings as well.

I came across this the other day.

As soon as you dynamic repository it will fail if using GitHubFlow.

The reason is because it looks for version.txt in the repository checkout directory, but there is no checkout directory since it's a bare clone.

That is already fixed (I am using that in production already).
