Trying to get it working on my laptop to review the software?

Using SQL Server 2008 R2, Windows 7, followed all the notes, but still doesn't work.

If anyone got the default app built in VirtualBox environment, any chance they would share that?

It's something I've been working on for a while. There a couple of build
dependencies.
What platform are you trying to build it on?

SQL Server 2008 R2 locally installed
Windows 7

What else would you need to know?

it should build on that platform. I am working on a Linux friendly build
https://github.com/open-health-hub/openmaxims-linux

I think it's fair to say that IMS Maxims are aware that the source they've
released is out of date and they are working on releasing an update
imminently

They don't use Git internally so releasing to GH is hard for them, although
they are committed to changing to use Git internally which will make it
easier for them to release new Stable builds, and to accept PRs

BTW I am working with them to help them streamline their open source
product, but I don't have commit access to this repo.

Which Linux version would you recommend?

Ubuntu, Debian, TurboLinux???? I will create an environment using VirtualBox

I'm targeting Ubuntu 14.04 Server LTS

Don't bother with the official version, it has loads of Character Encoding
issues in Linux, use the repo I sent you the link to openmaxims-linux, in
which I have already fixed all the character encoding issues.

I'm trying to get a DB schema from IMS Maxims for an open source database.
In house they use MSSQL
