JabRef 5.1--2020-04-30--862078a
Windows 10 10.0 amd64
Java 14.0.1

I tried to import https://doi.org/10.1152/ajpendo.00397.2019 via Jabfox. When this not work I exported the entry via zotero and used Crtl-I. Both times the Import-dialogue opened but never showed the entry. Only a jabref-shutdown was able to stop the unusable jabref.

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Open https://doi.org/10.1152/ajpendo.00397.2019
  2. Use the Jabfox button, the export goes to the three steps "Searching for bibliographic data", "converting to bibtex", "sending to Jabref"
  3. Jabref opens, the import window, too, but that window never shows the entry to import. Only a hart exit is possible.
  4. When using Zotero to export the entry and trying to import the entry via Ctrl-I, the import gets stuck again at the import window.

Hm. Directly pasting the DOI on the maintable works fine. So it seems like it's related to Jabfox

An what about importing the entry with Ctrl-I. There, Jabfox is not involved.
The not imported bibtex entry is:

@article{matsuo_rankl_2020, title = {{RANKL} induces beige adipocyte differentiation in preadipocytes}, issn = {0193-1849}, url = {https://journals.physiology.org/doi/abs/10.1152/ajpendo.00397.2019}, doi = {10.1152/ajpendo.00397.2019}, abstract = {The receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ({NF}-κB) ({RANK}), its ligand ({RANKL}) and the decoy receptor osteoprotegerin ({OPG}) are a triad of proteins that regulate bone metabolism, and serum {OPG} is considered a biomarker for cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes, however the implications of {OPG} in adipose tissue metabolism remains elusive. In this study, we investigate {RANK}-{RANKL}-{OPG} signaling in white adipose tissue browning. Histological analysis of osteoprotegerin knockout ({OPG}-/-) mice showed subcutaneous white adipose tissue ({sWAT}) browning, resistance for high fat diet-induced weight gain, and preserved glucose metabolism compared to wild type ({WT}) mice. Stromal vascular fraction ({SVF}) cells from {sWAT} of {OPG}-/- mice showed multilocular morphology and higher expression of brown adipocyte marker genes compared to those from {WT} group. Infusion of {RANKL} induced browning and elevated respiratory rates in {sWAT}, along with increased whole-body oxygen consumption in mice measured by indirect calorimetry. Subcutaneous {WAT}-derived {SVF} and 3T3-L1 cells, but not mature white adipocyte, differentiated to beige in the presence of {RANKL}. Moreover, both cell types even under white adipocyte differentiation showed multiloculated lipid droplet, lower lipid content and increased expression of beige adipocyte markers with {RANKL} stimulation. In this study, we show for the first time the contribution of {RANKL} to increase energy expenditure by inducing beige adipocyte differentiation in preadipocytes.}, journaltitle = {American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism}, shortjournal = {American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism}, author = {Matsuo, Flávia Sayuri and Araújo, Paulo Henrique Cavalcanti de and Mota, Ryerson Fonseca and Carvalho, Ana Júlia Rossoni and Queiroz, Mariana Santos de and Almeida, Beatriz Baldo de and Ferreira, Karen Cristine de Oliveira Santos and Metzner, Rodrigo Jair Morandi and Ferrari, Gustavo Duarte and Alberici, Luciane Carla and Osako, Mariana Kiomy}, urldate = {2020-05-01}, date = {2020-04-21}, note = {Publisher: American Physiological Society}, file = {Snapshot:D\:\\Datenbanken(kopie)\\Literaturdaten\\storage\\F8IMKUFP\\ajpendo.00397.html:text/html} }

For me it is working, both directly using JabFox and also manually using JabRef.bat -importBibtex "<the above bibtex>". Strange...

I checked again and it gets stuck in the import window. Using Crtl-I I was able to import. Strange indeed!

I can reproduce the issue with JabFox (have not tried Ctrl+I).

The failure to import via the control-I is definitely not related to Jabfox. Therefore, the issue should go back to Jabref. It is not at all related to Jabfox. This is very troublesome. It renders Jabref for me not working, since I check regularly a lot of table of contents from diverse scientific journals. Those articles worth reading are imported to Jabref. This situation is untenable when importing to Jabref is not possible.

Have you tried BibItNow! as a workaround?
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/bibitnow/

It does not solve the problem, but it might help you in the meantime.

This is indeed a problem with the import handler of JabRef, as the issue also appears when importing from the command line.

Today, with the latest snapshot of today, import via Zotero worked, while via JabFox didnot. This is sad, since the Jabfox import collects infomation which can not be automatically retrieved via Zotero or using the DOI.
It is still the import window where JabRef chokes.

I just tried to reproduce the issue here, but for me it's working fine. JabRef and JabFox both work fine on macOSX. I can iport the linked article fine.
there have also been recently some improvements regarding error handling in the import window.
