Unable to correctly link to classes in a multi module project with non-unique package names #2272
Comments
This is a known bug #2037
I hope we will fix this soon. |

@IgnatBeresnev I think you linked two unrelated issues (same gradle's module name vs same java package name in different gradle modules). Hope we don't wait for Gradle's fix for first when we have could fix second in #2901 :) |
@pbajurko I believe the underlying technical issue is the same, and fixing either one will hopefully fix all related problems, but of course it needs to be checked. Modules (subprojects) are processed individually at first, and cross-module link resolution is delayed until all of the modules have been processed. Once all of the modules have generated their individual documentation, one final run is made (in the multi-module mode) that assembles it all together and resolves all of the cross-module links. At this point, I think Dokka simply cannot differentiate between the same package names from different modules, or the same module names from different parents, as relative paths (from the module's root) are the same, while the absolute paths are actually different. We'll reopen and update the issues if these are indeed different problems, but it'd be nice to reduce the spread of information for now :) |
As described in #2913, this is currently Spring Framework Kotlin documentation. |
Having the same issue. A package Could Dokka implement a way to order modules when building the multi-module documentation? |
Fixes #2272. There is a situation where 2 (or more) gradle modules have the same package and dokka doesn’t know where to link. E.g. The class com.example.classA is in moduleA and com.example.classB is in moduleB moduleC depends on moduleA and moduleB. In moduleC: there is a link [com.example.classB]. Having only package-list, dokka doesn’t know where to link, since the package com.example is in both modules. This is short-term and temporary solution of #3368 to cover a case of links between only local modules in a project. It is based on #2901 from @EddieRingle. It generates an external link depending on a check if the local link exists. The check works only when the number of possible resolved links are more than one. * all-modules-page: Validate cross-module links during resolution The existing behavior was just taking the first module that includes the package name of a given reference, so this resulted in broken links when a package is split across multiple modules. This change checks to ensure the resolved file exists before choosing it as the target for the resolved link. Signed-off-by: Eddie Ringle <eddie@ringle.io> * Check links only if resolved links has more than one link * Add integration test * Refactor * Add comment --------- Signed-off-by: Eddie Ringle <eddie@ringle.io> Co-authored-by: Eddie Ringle <eddie@ringle.io>
Upon researching how to fix this bug, it became apparent that there are actually two cases:
The first case is the most common one, so we hope that the majority of problems related to incorrect cross-module links and non-unique package names have been fixed. The second one is more exotic and is much more difficult to fix, so we'll address it separately and a later date. |

This provides the plugin with access to options that are configured to only be retained in source and not at runtime (via [field option](https://togithub.com/protocolbuffers/protobuf/blob/v24.0/src/google/protobuf/descriptor.proto#L693-L702)). Descriptors in the `proto_file` field will not include any options configured this way for the files named in `file_to_generate` field. - Add `--exclude-source-retention-options` flag to `buf build`, which causes options configured to only be retained in source to be stripped from the output descriptors. </details> <details> <summary>jsx-eslint/eslint-plugin-react (eslint-plugin-react)</summary> ### [`v7.34.0`](https://togithub.com/jsx-eslint/eslint-plugin-react/blob/HEAD/CHANGELOG.md#7340---20240303) [Compare Source](https://togithub.com/jsx-eslint/eslint-plugin-react/compare/v7.33.2...v7.34.0) ##### Added - Fixes #2272.
Describe the bug
When using
dokkaHtmlMultiModule
in a multi-module project with non-unique package names (two different modules can contain the same package name), dokka incorrectly links classes in some other module.Example -
https://img.ly/docs/vesdk/apidocs/android/v9/pesdk-backend-video-core/ly.img.android.pesdk.backend.model.state/-video-editor-save-settings/index.html
Here,
VideoEditorSaveSettings
(in modulepesdk-backend-video-core
) extends from the classSaveSettings
(in modulepesdk-backend-core
). However, if you click on the link forSaveSettings
fromVideoEditorSaveSettings
's documentation (link above), it redirects to https://img.ly/docs/vesdk/apidocs/android/v9/pesdk-backend-adjustment/ly.img.android.pesdk.backend.model.state/-save-settings/index.htmlSo, basically, it is trying to find
SaveSettings
in thepesdk-backend-adjustment
module instead ofpesdk-backend-core
. I believe that this might be because the packagely.img.android.pesdk.backend.model.state
exists in bothpesdk-backend-adjustment
andpesdk-backend-core
which is somehow confusing dokka?Expected behaviour
dokka should be correctly able to link to classes in a multi-module project with non-unique package names.
In the example above, clicking on
SaveSettings
should redirect to https://img.ly/docs/pesdk/apidocs/android/v9/pesdk-backend-core/ly.img.android.pesdk.backend.model.state/-save-settings/index.htmlTo Reproduce
Mentioned the conditions above. I can create a sample project where the issue is reproducible if needed.

Yes, if someone can guide me which part of the code I should look at.
