Welcome to the Plankton wiki!
This wiki is dedicated to sharing open, consolidated and anonymized data on our user needs. Our users are primarily maritime robotics researchers and engineers.
During the first months of our project, we didn't spend a lot of time on coding, however we spent a lot of time on understanding our present and future user needs. So we gathered and analyzed existing open results of surveys on the needs of robotics researchers in terms of simulation. We also launched our own survey on these matters. You will find below the open data that we gathered during this phase, as well as our analyses of these results.
Consolidating these data and sharing our views on it is for us a mean to check that our goals and developments are aligned with the community of potential users and contributors. It will also be useful for other open source projects serving the needs of robotics researchers to jump-start more rapidly, or to adjust their orientations.
So, do not hesitate to contribute to this wiki with open data or new analyses. Enjoy the reading!
The anonymized raw data we gathered with our own survey on simulators for robotics research is here: Survey about simulators for robotics research. We conducted the survey between end of June to end of August 2020, and got 31 answers.
Our survey comes in addition to a list of publications we found interesting on simulation user needs, sorted by date of user needs data from most recent to older ones:
- March 2020 - AWS Robomaker survey. Survey conducted in March 2020 by the AWS Robomaker team about the needs, pain-points and usage seen on simulation in robotics development. Raw data published in May 2020, 85 answers to the survey.
- October 2019 - A Study on the Challenges of Using Robotics Simulators for Testing. A publication from squaresLab, at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science. Analysis of user needs based on a survey of 82 robotics developers from a diversity of backgrounds. The survey was done in October 2019 and the results published in April 2020. It addresses the current capabilities and limits of simulation technology in practice.
- February 2019 - Simulation requirements for users of Autoware. A discussion on simulation requirements for the autonomous vehicle, more specifically for Autoware users.
- 2017 - 20 Years of Reality Gap: a few Thoughts about Simulators in Evolutionary Robotics. A publication from Jean-Baptiste Mouret and Konstantinos Chatzilygeroudis which describes the requirements in terms of simulator of evolutionary robotics.
