What to expect from textDocument/onTypeFormatting?

I currently try to play around with the on type formatting feature. The goal is to implement some integration into the NeoVim editor.

So the server reports in its capabilities that the only trigger character is a new line. So I tried to construct some manual server requests for some line ending in my code. But I always receive a single TextEdit that adds no text to the end of the exact same line. I also malformed by code on purpose (which would be re-formatted by the server) to see if that would give me something. But nothing.

I tried to find anything related in the documentation but could not find something. I took also a quick look into the implementation. But must admit that I don't know what it is doing. 😅

So my question would be: what could I expect from this feature from this server? Are there some typical scenarios with example code? 🙂

• auto-complete commas in a table
• format the current line if there are no syntax errors

I found my mistake: I had to send the request with the cursor position at the next/new line. 😬
