this reverts the change in #296
it had the unintended side effect of keeping media with playback playing while hidden, which users did not like. also, with a lot of the work that has gone into allowing browser cache for media since then, ideally most instance owners won't be hit for image traffic like they were before images were allowed to be cachable by the browser
fixes #644
