This seems to be related to a relatively new security setting added to Git:

The fix seems to be adjusting your .gitconfig, as described here:

Open up .gitconfig (usually in c:\users\<username>\.gitconfig) and add:

[safe]
    directory = *

---

If this works for enough people, I might try to get Synth to suggest this fix from within the app

I'm currently having this error right now and the fix is not working for me. I don't have a Git file anywhere on my computer and the only config I have is in the Synthesis folder itself, but the fix doesn't work. I still get the crash log stating the repository path is not owned by user.

I'm on Windows...In order for me to fix the issue I just selected the folder I have Synthesis in, right clicked, and changed the security properties > Advanced. If this is confusing to others, you can use the same 2nd link (above) and scroll down a bit; it should show directions for "Folder Ownership." Follow those instructions, you may have to manually type in your Username (I did).

I'm on Windows as well.

I didn't have a .gitconfig file anywhere on my computer. (would it be possible to create one using a .txt file then adding the fix mentioned by @Noggog?)

I think it would be beneficial to add that little note for a future update to Synthesis. That or perhaps a link that can come to this page with various workarounds.

As for the fixes mentioned above:
I wasn't able to do the security tab method to take "full control" of the folder or pathway where I normally had the Synthesis folder. Granted it didn't work for me b/c when you right click on a folder to go to properties, the security tab isn't going to be there IF your folder is on a FAT32 or exFAT drive (usb drive basically). What worked for me was just changing the path that led up to the Synthesis folder. I placed the Synthesis folder into my "downloads" folder or onto my computer "desktop".

After that I was able to open and run Synthesis.exe properly without issues.

It's still weird though b/c I never had that happen before. Synthesis IS ABLE to run off a FAT32 or exFAT drive (just to be clear). Hopefully these fixes help others out in the future though.

And yeah, you can make a fresh .gitconfig yourself with the content in the fix link, i imagine

I had the Synthesis folder in a folder named "tools". I had installed NGVO modlist through Wabbajak. NGVO creates a replica of Skyrim game files so it's separate from the original unmodded version of Skyrim SE.

I bought an external drive specifically for Skyrim & other games. I had the modded version of the game (NGVO) on the drive.

(E:)/NGVO-Skyrim/tools/Synthesis

It was working perfectly fine when I launched it through Mod Organizer 2 or from the Synthesis folder itself before I updated the UI for Synthesis.

I grabbed the update, extracted the content from the zip file, placed the updated content into the Synthesis folder I already had to overwrite old files, then I launched MO2 (Mod Organizer 2) to launch Synthesis like normal but the Synthesis logo appeared for 3 seconds just to crash.

I thought it was perhaps something I did wrong in the updating process. I tried restarting my PC, launching the Synthesis.exe outside of MO2, uninstalling and reinstalling Synthesis, and checked to see if I had an updated .NET SDK. After that, I checked the log folder in Synthesis, read the file error, tried finding info on it online but was struggling, raged for like 30 mins to an hour cursing Skyrim for being complicated to mod at times lol, posted my issue, read the log error again & boom! I changed the Synthesis folder path by moving it somewhere else I thought the PC (really Synthesis) would recognize as me owning the path.

Also that's dope that we can make the .gitconfig file ourselves. I might do that method & place my Synthesis folder back where I originally had it. Thanks for the info.
