There's an odd behavior that occurs sometimes across multiple page reloads on the exploration page where the AOIs do not seem to be shown on the map. First I suspected that this was caused by the introduction of the static_mode, but after some debugging, I reverted all of the changes made in 936
and the issue still seems to persist.

It may take a while to reproduce the issue, but here it is occurring at 0:20 (the three hand-drawn geometries don't seem to show up)

I think we hold off on this one unless it becomes more prevalent. Feels like a rabbit hole that is only worth going down if the severity and frequency is high
