BTW, I would not suggest a stop-gap for using the old UBC file at 1950 when CH4 (and hence H2O) where higher than PI - there's always the risk that updating it will get forgotten and will it bite us later.

@dan800 Mike Mills created the existing UBC file. I'll see what I can do. Looks like we have CMIP6 output from 1850 though 2014 from the b.e21.BWHIST.f09_g17.CMIP6-historical-WACCM.00* cases. Does it sound reasonable to use these outputs?

@fvitt I think the new UBC file is fine. Interestingly, there looks to be an offset in these two simulations (f vs b) of about 0.5 ppmv). It looks like the f case branched from the b case.
Here is the global mean H2O at ~3hPa smoothed with a 12 month window from the two files:

The tropical LS values are different by the same amount, so I think this is down to different tropopause temperatures between the specified SST and free running ocean runs.

The response in the UTLS is almost immediate, but it takes a few years to propogate upwards to the impact the GM near the stratopause.

I checked the LBC file and it does look to have reasonable time and lat varying CO2 values, with it hovering around 285 ppm at year 1850.

There is an issue with the 1850 use cases.

In these use cases, we are setting:

For instance, the dataset

Deciding on on which species to use is way beyond my expertise.
However, my own request would be to use the same files for B1850 and BHIST if possible. This is to avoid to have a jump when we branch the BHIST from the B1850. These jumps create a lot of discussions that could be avoided if we use the same files. My own 2 cents.

@JulioTBacmeister since we have the methane oxidation in the chemistry, we don't want the methane oxidation file as external forcing at all. So, this file is not needed any more in any of our model runs. @dan800 please correct me if I am wrong.
Further, we should consider including this file:

I think, that is what was done for previous 1850 simulations, but it is dependent on what forcings should be used. The idea is that in 1850 the stratosphere is not volcanically clean.

Agree that MT should be a priority. It would be good to see the workhorse tuned up.

I agree that we should work on tuning GW in MT first. However, looking at the plots Isla sent I don't think tau_0_ubc=True looks that bad in the NH. Maybe we just have a little too much GW drag in the NH ....

I will ask Cheryl that we create a CAM tag with that, so we can create the CESM tag and start the first coupled simulation.

@cecilehannay surface emissions are correct. Differences in rad_climate are correct.
External forcings:
Again, if we want it consistent for B1850 and HIST, we want to add the aircraft emissions, as in the same directory as the others:

Those will be important later on, but if we don't want to forget them in the HIST you can add them now.

@tilmes @fvitt Does the chemistry distinguish between the SOAE sources? Each one of these files is 0.5GB and if the sources can be combined with the weights as are listed, then someone could save 11.5 GB of disk space and the time taken to download all that data and any runtime speed up from having to weighted sum these files. Or we could just have two files - anthro and bb and save 11GB.

@tilmes @fvitt Just bouncing this to the top of your inbox - considering the storage and cpu savings, is there a compelling reason not to combine these SOAE surface emissions?

@dan800 I don't understand your suggestion, the emissions files are provided by CMIP6 in this way, and will be provided again in CMIP7. We have never combined emission files, and that is an extra step that can cause errors..but happy to discuss more.

Also if you combine these, you lose the information of the factors in front of them, needed to change to a different emission dataset.

@dan800 As Simone @tilmes wrote, by specifying each of the emissions files, which are the ones used in the full chemistry simulation, we are simplifying the process of creating emissions files and maintaining consistency with the full chemistry simulations. I cannot imagine the cost of reading in multiple files is really significant.
All of this will be moot when we move to using HEMCO.
