I'd expect alphabetical listing to be initialized in this case.

I strongly suspect that this is due to the code trying to open this erroneous concept in hierarchical view by default, and failing (thus showing the empty listing). I'd propose an alternative method for solving this issue in this case: Open the alphabetical view instead of the hierarchical one.
