This reverts commit c530cda, reversing changes made to 4adcdff.

This PR conflicts with #6530, which we're trying to get merged soon, and I don't feel qualified to figure out how to merge it into that branch. @Kha Would you mind reopening this PR rebased on https://github.com/edolstra/nix/tree/lazy-trees?
