ssb-patchwork crashes when trying to change profile picture

Describe the bug
When clicking on "Profile > Edit your profile > Choose profile image", ssb-patchwork crashes.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. nix-env -iA nixpkgs.ssb-patchwork
2. Profile > Edit your profile > Choose profile image
3. 💥

Expected behavior
A file browser window shows up

@mkf, let's keep the conversation in a single issue.

@NinjaTrappeur The way I obtained the error message was by launching it from a terminal. It clearly doesn't do that for me. I use awesomewm and xterm.

:( That's to be expected, this workaround probably depends on some impurities coming from my host system.

resolving this diff with today's master requires quite some time and understanding from me, i'm afraid i will be forced to just leave it for now and stay without an avatar due to being in trouble with time recently
