This PR merges the code reviewed in #524 with support for the v2 database backend.

getUserAvatar and loadUserPin - could be done by state and @observer instead of waiting on the store, or possibly a separate lib
retrieveMapPins and retrievePinFilters should be combined in a single call before processing
