Homepage updates/redesign

From discussion with @gcharters after recent re-reviews of the homepage, inc:

• Not clear that there is more to scroll to on the current homepage (at Macbook resolution, just the tractor beam image is displayed; on larger monitor I get the "Develop cloud-native Java microservices" section but neatly cut beneath the Learn more button so it's still not obvious that there's more to com).
• Performance chart promotes OpenJ9 rather than OL value.
• We're trying to talk about too many things.
• Not enough about value; starting too deep.
• Too many things on the homepage.
• Do we know from analytics if anyone clicks on anything in the News section?

That's a good idea to use analytics to determine what parts of the home page people actually click and interact with.

It's hard to tell that the yellow tiles that go to guides on MicroProfile topics are clickable.

Should the Twitter feed be more prominent at the top? If a user keeps coming to the site, and has already seen the initial information on Open Liberty then they might want to see updates from our Twitter without having to scroll to the bottom of the page each time.

Home page redesign

Main Goals

• Shorten the top section and make it clear that there is more content below
  • Reduce space taken by UFO/narrow the beam
• Update performance charts (or possibly replace with InstantOn data?)
  • Use horizontal bar chart instead of vertical column chart to reduce space taken by graphs
• Reduce how many different topics are being discussed
• Add “MP Reactive Messaging” tile
  • Should we revisit the Microprofile tiles?
  • Diversify from promoting MP
• Add endorsements and more about the value of OL

Going through the homepage together

• Do we want to focus on those same tiles for the homepage?
• Validate OS integration list towards bottom; change wording to be less like buttons; possibly look into logo use
• Try to increase traffic for News section; discuss with marketing; try to move it up the page
• Update contributor pictures

Contrast issues

• Discuss with design

Other

• Remove anyone who is no longer at IBM from contributors section ASAP
