Documented here: https://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html#elementsIOThreadsAllocation iothreads is the new x-data-plane and yields huge performance gains for block devices.

In order to activate it,

  1. an iothread (or more) needs to be defined
  2. virtio disks need to be passed in one iothread (or one per disk) as an attribute

I will submit a PR for this.

This has become more important in light of the performance impact of Meltdown so I will try to submit a PR in Februari.
