Imo we should reconsider the old delegateBySig function since it was added in the context of not having account abstraction popularized. So right now we can still achieve the functionality for EOAs that don't want to delegate their accounts with ECDSA by default but the delegator argument allows to easily extend to other mechanisms like SignatureChecker.
