Thread to discuss topics you would like to cover. Please also suggest talks you would like to give.

I've just heard (http://channel9.msdn.com/Shows/Cloud+Cover/Episode-160-Event-Hubs-with-Elio-Damaggio) that Halo is using Azure Event Hub with Orleans. I would like to hear more about Event Hubs and howthe integration with Orleans is done.

I would like to hear @yevhen talk about his Orleans.Bus project and Orleans patterns / best practices.

Ha, ye. This is possible.
But I'm not sure whether I'll have time able to create presentation.
So if talk + code samples is ok - then why not :)

Then I will have enough time to prepare.
So, can count me in :)

Another topic idea: a general questions and answers meeting with people who are running Orleans in production to talk about tips, issues and gotchas they've encountered.

Great idea. Perhaps have a panel, and a few questions prepared?

What about inviting Orleans' authors? Sergey, Gabi, Niclaus.
This might be interesting. We can have Q&A session then :)

We can definitely do that.
It is a bit quiet here now in US with all the holiday. We can set this to the beginning of January.
What types of questions people were thinking about?

Gabi Kliot

@richorama

Awesome.

I'd be really interested to hear about:

  1. The roadmap for Orleans, and what the team have planned.
  2. How can the community help and contribute?
  3. Failure modes in Orleans, and what to expect (i.e. network partitions, failed nodes).
  4. How to adjust the configuration for different requirements (i.e. retry logic, membership and node timeouts etc...)

We've got @yevhen lined up for the next meetup and @ReubenBond some time after that. Perhaps we could squeeze a 'panel discussion' somewhere in-between - or afterwards? If you guys could provide a preferred date and time (preferably by forking the repo and updating the readme) then I'll sort the google hangout stuff.

Hi, guys

The start of January is usually busy here, due to New Year and XMas celebrated on 7th of Jan. It's basically a party period until 14 of Jan :) I'll be on vacation for a few weeks as well, so it's safe to say that I can participate not earlier than end of January - say Jan 26 is more or less real.

Is that ok for everyone? If not - then we can schedule panel with guys from Orleans team first, and then next meetup dedicate to contrib projects.

Should we do the roadmap/Q&A discussion next week? How about Monday late morning PST, so that it's not too late in Europe and not too early in Australia? Will this work for you guys?

Sounds good to me. If it's not too early for AU folks. Should we do it in Google Hangout again? I've never used it before. Am I reading it right that it's limited to 10 concurrent users?

@david enjoy the skiing!

Would anyone but up for presenting on a show dedicated to telemetry and monitoring?

As discussed with @sergeybykov on gitter it could cover:

  1. how folks do telemetry integration, monitoring, and alerting today;
  2. what we need to do going forward to a) make the experience smoother and less error prone; b) remove duplication of functionality within the codebase and overlaps with external tooling; c) cross-platform aspects.

It would be great to do meetup themed on deploying and updating Orleans. Does anyone have an interesting strategy for this that they can share?

@jkonecki
Copy link

I've just got my custom Octopus Deploy step template for YAMS included into Octopus Library. I could briefly explain how we host Orleans using Yams and deploy using Octopus - I would imagine 10 mins will suffice.

@richorama

@jkonecki sounds great.

Would be particularly interested in:

  • How you handle changes to persisted state (i.e. to ensure that state is backward compatible).
  • How do you roll back?
  • What impact does it have on system performance?
  • What are the areas of pain?

One suggestion I have is a 'deep dive on Orleans internals'.

FSM could be the other choice. @johnazariah can guide us through his new shiny project, @jkonecki may share experience with Stateless, I can talk about switchable behaviors in Orleankka.

Would people find a mailing list useful, to announce meetups?

jkonecki commented Mar 23, 2017 via email

@galvesribeiro

I think Mailing lists get things lost specially if you deal with a big amount of emails... Would be better if you create an Issue with an announcement, just like asp.net people do. Whoever is subscribed will be notified.

@sergeybykov
Copy link
Contributor

@galvesribeiro You mean a single issue in dotnet/orleans? I like that better than a mailing list.

@galvesribeiro
Copy link
Member

@sergeybykov I meant something like this https://github.com/aspnet/Announcements

Whenever they want to publish an announcement, everyone gets notified. This repo has just it. All issues are closed etc. But they have their own organization, Orleans doesn't. So I suggest create a repo like that here in OrleansContrib org just for that. So all blog post, release, breaking change get notified here.
