I downloaded "perl5.005_03" from the perl website and got to installing it. But it seems to want a C compiler. I therefore downloaded "gcc-2.7.2.1.tar" from the SCO website. I thought that this was the Gnu C compiler. I installed this and when i executed "gcc" from any path, it displays"
$ gcc
gcc​: No input files
", i presume that it means it has installed properly but doesnt have any C files to compile.
But when i run "sh Configure -Dprefix=/usr/bin/perl1 -Dcc=gcc" then it goes through a whole lot of commands until it gets to which C compiler it must use"Use which C compiler? [gcc] " when i press enter to accept the default, then it gives me this message-"
Checking for GNU cc in disguise and/or its version number...

*** WHOA THERE!!! ***
  Your C compiler "gcc" doesn't seem to be working!
  You'd better start hunting for one and let me know about it.
$

I ' vi 'ed the Confirm file, it looks for gccvers.c, and does something with it(i am not quite sure what )i did a find command and found there was no gccvers.c , so i downloaded one from the SCO skunkware site and put it in several places for the "Configure file" to find it, but no luck . i have tried the "sh Configure" command with "-Dcc=/usr/bin/gcc" which is the path to the gcc executable, and there is still no progress.

I am running SCO 5.0.4 Enterprise Edition if that helps at all.
During the "Configure" process it gave me the OS vesion as " 3.2v5.0.4 "
What have I done wrong? Doesnt Unix come with it's own version of a C compiler for the Configure program.How do i fix this .

I also tried to modify the Configure file to skip the C compiler checking, but it actually needs it further along in the process, to compile certain things ,as i found out, and so it aborted.
