Translating Interfaces to Spanish

In preparation for a potential deployment in part of Mexico City, we need to translate our interfaces to Spanish.

I see three key areas for this:

• The tutorial (lots of text). Have you taken the tutorial yet? Go to http://projectsidewalk.io and click 'Start Exploring' and you'll start with an interactive labeling tutorial
• The core labeling and validation interfaces, which includes the text for the buttons, tags, etc.. This seems potentially easier than the tutorial (less text). And I think we'd likely want to focus most of our attention on this (at least at first).
• The Labeling Guide, which again has a ton of text: https://sidewalk-newberg.cs.washington.edu/labelingGuide

Following up on this, I'm guessing that most (or all) or our UI Strings for text are constants rather than variables, which will make internationalization harder. Perhaps Scala or other frameworks have built-in support for internationalization. Not sure how big of a 'coding ask' this is (e.g., how much time it may take).

Even given the translations for everything, it would be a pretty big coding undertaking. Yes the Scala/Play framework has something for internationalization, but you're right that almost all of our text is in constants not variables, which would take a long time. Furthermore, not all of our text is in the HTML (oops), some is in the javascript. We would have to move that text from JS to HTML so that we can use this feature of the Play Framework.

Also in the JS we would want to internationalize the dates/times everywhere.

Not that this isn't worthwhile, I think it is a great idea. Just trying to be realistic about how long it would take me to do.

Right, so, I think we'd have to prioritize the UI first and then move outward from there.

First priority would be primary UI then tutorial imo.

@gari01234 one thing I noticed when looking at the translations: "obstacle in path" was translated to "obstáculo en el camino". My concern is that "camino" is translated to both "path" and "road". Do you think people might confuse this to mean "obstacle in the street"? We might want to come up with an alternate translation if that is a possibility, b/c we don't want users labeling obstacles in the street.

note to self: "banqueta" is used for "sidewalk" in Mexican Spanish specifically. In most of the world, the word "acera" is used instead. And "banqueta" would be particularly confusing for them because most people would translate that to "bench" lol

@gari01234 do you think it makes most sense to keep the translation of "neighborhood" to "barrio"? Or should we switch it to "colonias" since that's the delineation we are actually using?
