Based on suggestions provided here - #38. I went ahead with implementing the solution using django routers. This is a draft PR, just wanted to get a go-ahead on the approach before I can proceed to actually implementing it completely.

Using a router is definitely the right way to go about it. There definitely need to be some tests to confirm it works correctly.

I'll admit, the database configuration in the tests for this project are a little complex, but just using SQLite in memory for the second ought to be fine, since the rest of the database setup is tested elsewhere.
